News – September – 2013

I just finished a new big band composition. This one’s called “Helicopter” and it was written for the Dallas Jazz Orchestra’s 40th Anniversary. It always feels great to finish a commission. I can’t wait to hear the DJO play it!  I’m especially excited about two gigs coming up this months: 1. The BiCoastal Collective hits in Antigonish on Sept 18th; the collective will be tracking it’s fourth studio album right after too! 2. The duo Jake Hanlon and I have is headlining the Antigonight: Art After Dark festival.  Hooray for September!

In late August I went out the the Getzen factory to work with the Edwards team. I also got to work on mouthpieces with master metal spinner, Christian Griego. There are some great projects in the works; the Edwards Gen IV proto-type trumpets are very happening, the Edwards Flugel is just about to production stage, and Getzen is doing real cool things on the redesign of some of their horns! Working on mouth pieces was a real education; it’s great to experience all the small details that go into the design. From start to finish, it’s a intense process.

I am extremely happy to announce that I am now an endorsing artist for Facet Mutes. These wooden mutes are truly a work of art and they make my job as an artist easier. The Brusio is amazing; no metal harmon can compare. All my trumpet buds need to play these ASA – they’ll change the way you think about mutes. The guys (Bruce Lee and Don Davis) at Facet Mutes have taken ideas from the great guitar and percussion makers and applied them to making brass mutes.  The kind of wood used affects the sound – this is one of the coolest advancements in trumpet playing in decades!

WGG

In rehearsals, with the Upstream Orchestra, for a performance at the Festival International Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville, Quebec.  A big highlight of the program is Barry Guy’s “Witch Gong Game”. It’s really neat to unpack this music and hear it unfold at the rehearsals. The score itself is a work of art.

I am premiering a fantastic piece of new music next weekend – April 14th.  The composer, Jim O’leary, and I have been friends since we both studied together in Sweden in the late 90s. This new piece “Choose Other Routes” promises to be ear bending and mind blowing!

From the PEISO webpage:

Jim O’Leary, the PEI Symphony’s Composer-in-Residence will see the world premiere of his latest work.  A departure from his previous works, “Choose Other Routes” has been written for the acclaimed jazz trumpet performer Paul Tynan, who will be its featured soloist. O’Leary has dedicated this work to retiring music director James Mark. According to Jim “the only honest attitude of an artist is to express himself, to bring something in which one really believes. Because to follow the tastes of other people, to try to please them, it’s a false direction.” – Witold Lutoslawski
